While some may say that my blog title is misleading after what I tell you, I assure you it’s not! I really am on a diet, I just had gastric bypass surgery to help me along. I’ve struggled with weight my entire life and I finally gave in and asked for help. I’ve tried numerous diets out there, all with minor to non-existent results. So where to start? Well, I’ll go back to the beginning of February 2013.
I was looking at my final year in Culinary School, same as my hubby, a bad back, rising health problems and finally a really bad cold. That cold went into my chest and just made life miserable. I couldn’t breathe and went to my doctor, who sent me to the hospital. While there I was diagnosed with diabetes and high blood pressure. Now, I’ve always been big, but I’ve never had any of the ‘related’ health issues, so this really was a wake up call for me! After a few days in the hospital, I came home. I called my insurance and asked them if they covered weight loss surgery and bless their hearts, they do. So I gathered everything I needed from them and started to find out what I needed to do to get approval.
As I started looking at surgeons, talking to my primary care physician and others that I know have had the surgery, I felt an absolute sense of calm come over me, I KNEW this was the right choice for me. Things fell into place really quickly, the only roadblock was one of the gals at the physicians office, but I got what I needed done, done. I got my approval and I broke down in tears. Something I had thought about in the back of my head for years was going to become a reality! I could hardly believe it.
I went in to surgery on September 6th, 2013, weighing 402 lbs. There was a time (most of my life, actually) that I would have been absolutely terrified if you asked me how much I weighed or what size I wore. Not anymore. No shame here. Why? Because it does NO one any good by glossing over the subject. Also, maybe I can help inspire someone else along the way.
I do a confession. I have someone that inspired me to be better. Do you want to know who it is? It’s Me! When you can’t look in the mirror and you are stressed out when you have to buy new clothes because you can only order online; you have to step back and really, honestly, assess your situation. The other person that inspired me? My hubby. Why? Because we want to have children someday AND we want to be around to enjoy them!
I’ll be posting updates and pictures on my journey as well as fun recipe ideas and suggestions on how to make your desserts a little bit more healthy. If you have specific diets, send me over your recipes you are looking at and we can figure out how to adjust it for your diet.
I hope you enjoy learning about my journey to a better, healthy lifestyle. Hopefully we can grow together!
